The Vibrarians are an Olympia band comprised of Leah Cipolla, bass and vocals; Carly Epstein, drums and Sixx, guitar and vocals. They have inverted punk and rock'n'roll music, creating their own style: part severe bubblegum, part torrid garage pop, they decimate the squares, skimming the cream of grunge to blast the most desperate teenage anthems. Unlike other icons of Northwest music, this band smells good.
It all started in March, 2008, when Sixx, aware of Carly's awesome Michigan style, recruited her for a living room guitar and drum bash session. Carly's housemate (Leah!) wanted to join in, too, but they held off inviting her. One day, after Leah returned from a trip East, she was outside the house with her skateboard. Her style on deck was superlative; she had to be invited inside, an essential contributor to the vacuum-abhorring sound of the Vibrarians.
The Vibrarians played every house party in town. They turn up the volume, sing through their trademark telephone mics and transform into crazy pumpkins! Dancing ensues. Sometimes a fog machine is employed, the Vibrarians decked out in matching mechanic suits and a mysterious Vibe Triangle formation.
In late spring they launched a mini-tour of the Northwest including live broadcasts on KPSU, Portland, and KAOS-FM in Olympia. Anticipating their European tour they raised funds selling artwork, cupcakes, custom fanny packs, puffy paint and silk-screened shirts. The summer was spent on a Scandinavian tour, an appearance at Ladyfest Berlin, and recording their debut 45. It is a three song EP featuring "Red Light", "Modern Walker" and "The Woods", recorded at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia with Calvin Johnson, released as Volume CXXII of the International Pop Underground series of 7" 45 rpm vinyl records.
